Brass A Novel Xhenet Aliu Books

Brilliant writing! Written in parallel narratives of mother and daughter, and the daughter's story is written in second person. Sounds crazy, but it works. You won't have many opportunities to read first rate fiction in second person. We follow characters through bleak circumstance deftly described, immersed in the plight of Albania in the 90's and the reality of crumbling American dreams wading through broken promises. The pain and resilience needed to endure is etched into your mind.

Brass A Novel Xhenet Aliu Books Reviews

You won’t regret it. Needed a good read and this satisfied.
Crisp, edgy writing. Honest, believable characters and a great story about finding yourself, mothers and daughters and immigrant culture. Highly recommend.
Excellent read, very relatable and enjoyable. She has a marvelous sense of humor and spot on observations of the human animal
This is a slick book, cleverly written, about characters we normally read about in sociological nonfiction. But it makes you feel for the women at the same time you wish they'd make better choices and have better luck in what they do.
I am a man and a psychiatrist, burt it does not require either to be able to appreciate the intriguing and arresting drama of this three generations of women. A remarkably candid and well written story. I give it 5 stars because it is a first novel and shows such promise. Good job Ms Aliu and thank you.
A novel of growing up as and the need to know your roots. Set in Waterbury, CT, the former brass manufacturing town. The characters are so real and down to earth. I look forward to more books by this a author!
This is the story of Elsie and Elsie's daughter Luljeta in Waterbury, Connecticut. The town is floundering as its mills have closed down and Elsie works as a waitress at a diner. The story is told by mother and daughter in alternating chapters.
The author immediately draws you into the story and your heart breaks for the difficulties that Elsie and luljeta endure. I found myself rooting for both of them as I eagerly turned the pages. My only regret is at the end, Luljeta's search did not end in the manner in which I had hoped.
This is a very well written debut novel.
