This book isn't for everyone, although with the popularity of Fifty Shades of Gray (which I thought was awful) I suppose it is for more people than I would have thought. There is a lot of strong language and extremely graphic and unusual sex scenes. What saved this book from being just out and out porn was the quality of the writing and the author's ability to self-reflect on his behavior and explain it. My favorite parts of the book were not the sex scenes, and I actually wish some of the things that are touched on, like his relationship with John Lennon and Norman Mailer, were given more prominence in the book.

There is very little about Jeffrey's life as described in this book that appeals to me or that I can relate to. Which is why he really pulled off a writer's coup when he made me understand where he was coming from. In a nutshell, he views sex unemotionally, except with the one he is devoted to. In his own twisted way, he is rather monogamous. With everyone but his beloved, sex is a sensual pleasure with no more connection to emotion than I feel to the bottle when I drink a good, complex red wine. He views everything and everyone with an eye towards pleasure, and I'd imagine this was a good part of his charm back in the day. It gives him pleasure to please others, and the happier the people are that he is around, the happier he is. It was interesting, from a sociological standpoint, to read how he dealt with jealousy at orgies when he went with a 'date.' There is a beguiling, cock-eyed (ha ha) unselfishness to it. I didn't get the impression that he was trying to shock or impress. He was like anyone else telling you about this great time he had once upon a time. He has no filter and no shame, so there is no whitewashing of what happened. He's not afraid to look like a schmuck. It was interesting to hear him describe what he would and wouldn't do. What emerged was a picture of a man with a clear, unwavering moral compass -- it is just that his points East instead of North. Whether you approve of what he did or didn't, it is an unvarnished, well written history of a subculture that existed in the day when everything could be cured with penicillin.

There are a lot of comparisons to Fifty Shades of Gray in the other reviews, probably because of the BDSM elements. Beyond the presence of a whip or two, there is no relation between the two books. Like the subject matter or not, this book is literature, giving insight into characters (real people) you couldn't have dreamed up yourself and giving fresh thought to what concepts like jealousy, pleasure, and morals really are.

Arrived fast! More documenty then story. It was an interesting/enlightening read. Very different from the pop genre.
SEXY
A unique love story set in a time long ago and a land far, far away. Periods of almost incredible sexual prowess, balance by uniquely philosophical insight. Hard to stop turning the pages to know where Jeffrey takes you next on his incredible journey. A must read for afficinados of the 70s and 80s sex, drugs and rock and roll scene.
Get a good night's rest and open this book on a Saturday morning. Don't make any plans for the rest of the day, evening and perhaps Sunday too if you are not a fast reader. This book is the very definition of a "page turner." Oh, and yes, the sex is great, the descriptions of the rockus night life of the 70's in NYC are great. Jeffery gives us a bird's eye view as well as a "pillow view" of the wild times he had. I admire the writer's candor and his willingness to point out his own failings as well as victories. Oh, and did I mention the sex?
More than the erotica, it is the life lessons the author so candidly shared I appreciate and cherish the most.
Laura Meets Jeffrey was surprising, in a number of ways - all good.

I expected it to be hot, and it was; sometimes truly erotic and sometimes so explicitly detailed as to make me wince or gag. What I didn't expect was that my reactions would be so...visceral. I felt it, tasted it... and found myself surreptitiously touching myself in public, using my iPad to shield my excitement from view while reading at Starbucks. More than once I found myself wondering if I was more jealous of the amazing lust (for almost everybody) or the love (for each other) that Jeffrey and Laura experienced. I know that I was jealous that these people got to live out my fantasies, and that I never got to know the '80s as they did. While I read Penthouse Forum in the bathroom, they were living, really living, and have a ton of memories that, thankfully, they're willing to share.

I also didn't expect this book to be so well written - so...literary. Michelson's vivid descriptions included a number of words - perfect choices - that I didn't know, and I was thankful for the built in one-click dictionary in the app (the book wasn't yet available on iTunes). I love the way that Laura's comments on Jeffrey's story-telling are inserted in-line, almost as though they're in the room together, telling the story with the wisdom of hindsight. That's another thing that surprised me, how much Michelson commented on his own decisions, good or bad, and the honesty with which he reflected upon each situation. Their explorations of the B&D/S&M lifestyle and how Laura craved it as a way to actually release pain and Jeffrey's reactions to having Laura submit to him so completely were fascinating, titillating and often exhausting. I noticed my breathing rate increase substantially during some particularly exciting moments.

Other surprising things; there are several "how to" components of this book that are really funny, very insightful and often valuable. Michelson offers sage advice on ending a relationship without the likelihood of retribution (or IRS audit), there's a primer on anal sex, a detailed explanation of "the test spank," and an acknowledgement called "Ten Things I learned from Normal Mailer." The relationship with Mailer and his family and his influence on Laura and Jeffrey is really special, especially a near-the-end reunion with Mailer that is truly touching. The parts that John and Yoko Lennon, Ryan O'Neil, Timothy Leary and other luminaries play in the story added nicely to the fun and interest for me. And the fact that this a real story, all the better because it's factual and rife with clever and stylish commentary, make it a good read.

I expected to consider this book in a similar vein to Howard Stern's Private Parts; wondering what, audacious "everyone's thinking it but nobody is actually saying it" thing he'll say or do next - but it's more than that - a lot more. You can draw a few parallels; the insecure Jewish guy with love handles who comes into his own, the love story, the celebrities. But if Michelson deserves folk hero status - and as far as I'm concerned he does, it's for showing us a few snippets of a life lived to the absolute fullest, without fear or excuses and by taking every opportunity to taste every single morsel of it. He's shown us; some of us unassuming suburbanites with nice houses and families and careers - and spectacular fantasy lives made possible through online porn, like me - what it would have been like if we had taken more risks... and played more.
