Judgment A Novel Joseph Finder Books

I was very disappointed in the latest Jospeh Finder book. I had read all of this other books so I really looked forward to reading the newest one.

I found the characters to be plastic, in essence cut outs. None of them seemed real. I do not want to offer any plot spoilers, but when I reached the "great reveal" eight-ninety percent of the way through the book , it seemed forced. in my view, Finder focused on a couple of hot button issues, i.e. "me too law suits" and Russian oligarch conspiracy issues and glued them together.

It was a quick but unsatisfactory read.

Judgment A Novel Joseph Finder Books Reviews

Judgment by Joseph Finder is a cautionary tale of one mistake, one errant slip of bad judgment coming back to haunt. After a one night stand, blackmail of a judge is attempted in order to throw a sexual harassment lawsuit out of court. Instead of rolling over, she fights and as this onion is slowly peeled, slimier and slimier layers are revealed. She goes way off the reservation, conducting her own investigation, forcing her lie to the police and eventually defending her life and going toe to toe with a Russian oligarch.

While the setup seemed a bit forced (she was too easily seduced), the "cover-up" evolved quite effortlessly. Her adversaries couldn't seem to make up her mind as they played good cop / bad cop / and bizarre cop. Most disappointing was that the intensity of the setup never seemed to suggest anything beyond a simple defense by a struggling startup while the reader know something bigger was afoot. Once the murder occurred, it was clear this was more than just sexual harassment. The effortless background research by the private detective was also just short of what the NSA and CIA could pull off. Lastly, the notion that a Uber / Lyft johnnie come lately competitor with a MeToo poster child for a CEO could create software that a foreign government would hope to steal is a bit outlandish (video card graphic chips are a different beast). And her loser son suddenly becoming college was a bit of stretch.
I was about ten years of age when the Alfred Hitchcock hour played on Friday night. I was permitted to stay up because there was no school the next day.
I was hooked on the psychological thrillers and stunned on the shocking or surprising endings.
Many years past and I discovered an author by the name of Joseph Finder. I have read everyone of his books and look forward with every new book he publishes. I had Judgment in my hands on the first day it was released.
Here we have a prominent judge who had a lack of good judgment and went to bed with someone she met at a bar. Unbeknownst to the judge, the hotel room had clandestine video cameras and recorded their sex.
Subsequently the judge is being extorted to rule in favor of a high profile civil case.
Not giving anymore away, there are many surprises that Joseph Finder will bring up with his excellent writing skills. Joseph Finder has masterfully blended the psychological, legal, and moral issues involving the judge breaking the law to save herself.
I thoroughly enjoyed this thriller and can see it hit the big screen.
CAN YOU JUDGE THE JUDGE

Juliana Brody is an excellent judge and an admirable person. She might
actually be a candidate for the Supreme Court at some point. Throughout her
life she has always played by the rules and has no sympathy for those who do
not. She pursues lawbreakers with icy resolve. However, in a momentary lapse
at a convention she allows herself to be seduced by a younger, charming man.
Although embarrassed by this out of character mistake, she feels it is a one - off
and is prepared to go back to her normal life.
But it turns out that the man with whom she had the tryst is not a one - off. It
was a setup and the sexual encounter has been taped. The intent of the dark
forces behind this sexual ambush demand that Juliana rule a certain way
in a case - or she will be made an unwilling pornstar on the internet.
Not only is her career at stake; so is her life and the life of her family. For the
first time in her life Juliana starts breaking the rules, and outright violating the
law. But her alternatives are awful. What would you do? I found myself
empathizing with the Juliana. Can you really judge the judge?
An important part of this story revolves around a Russian oligarch, Yuri
Protasov. He is one of the richest men in the world and has become influential by
spreading his largesse to universities, charitable organizations, etc. However, he
Is a cat’s paw for Putin; Yuri is a wholly owned asset of the Kremlin. He is the
secret owner of a ride hailing company, Wheelz, which is illegally funded by
a Russian bank under US sanctions. Wheelz has a hidden gem - technology
which can advance self driving military vehicles and could alter the course of
military warfare. Protasov is the dark force behind the staged encounter of Juliana
with the gigolo.
He arranges a number of murders before he is unmasked, and he himself is murdered.
If you have read about Russia – directed assassinations in places like London, not
so hard to believe.

Fred Dimond
Would have been five star. But the story was overshadowed by a dog chewing a Trump toy lookalike..
Too bad as that added nothing to the story line, it was just irritating.
